NHL Player Props: The Complete Guide to Betting Hockey Props

Ask a room of hockey bettors what they played tonight and most will give you the same answer: shots on goal, over. It's the NHL's most popular player prop โ clean, fun, easy to follow. It's also, across the 7,357 NHL props we've graded, one of the worst bets on the board: shots-on-goal overs cash just 44.7% of the time on the biggest sample we track. Meanwhile the strongest category in our data is a bet almost nobody brags about โ blocked shots, under. This guide covers the whole NHL prop game: the menu, where to bet it, the deployment logic that actually drives hockey stat lines, and what our tracked data says about where the edges โ and the traps โ really are.
What Are NHL Player Props?
NHL player props are bets on an individual player's performance โ not on which team wins. Examples:
A defenseman UNDER 1.5 blocked shots A top-line winger OVER 0.5 points A first-pair defenseman OVER 22.5 minutes of ice time (TOI)
The bet settles on the player's stat line, whatever the final score. Hockey props reward a specific kind of knowledge: not who the best player is, but how he's being used โ which line, which power-play unit, how many minutes, against which matchup. Usage is public information. Most prices don't fully reflect it.
The NHL in 60 Seconds
The prop-relevant facts, fast:
32 teams, 82 games, October through April, then the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Deep slates most nights mean most prop lines are model-generated and lightly supervised.
Ice time is the currency. Forwards play 12โ22 minutes depending on line; top defensemen play 22โ26. Every counting stat a player posts is downstream of his deployment.
Lines are roles. A first-line winger and a third-line winger on the same team live in different prop universes, and mid-season line shuffles reprice players faster than books adjust.
Goalies warp everything. A pulled goalie, an empty net, a blowout โ late-game states change shot volume, ice time distribution and scoring chances all at once.
Where Can I Bet on NHL Player Props?
DraftKings and FanDuel carry the full NHL prop menu nightly, with PrizePicks and Underdog offering pick'em versions of the core markets (points, shots, saves). NHL menus are thinner than the NBA's at some books โ shots and points are universal, while blocked shots, hits and faceoffs come and go by book and by night. Because coverage is patchy, the line you see is often the only line posted โ which cuts both ways: less shopping, but also less market consensus baked into the number.
The NHL Player Prop Menu: What's Actually Offered?
Points (PTS) โ goals + assists. The headline skater market. Shots on goal (SOG) โ the volume king, and per our data, the trap (below). Time on ice (TOI) โ pure deployment. Boring, stable, and one of our better markets. Hits (HITS) โ physicality props; scoring is arena-dependent, since hit counting varies by building and scorer. Blocked shots (BLK) โ the defensive grinder market, and our strongest category overall. Faceoffs won (FOW) โ a centers-only chess match of matchup and handedness. Goalie saves / goals against โ where offered; workload-driven, tied to the opposing team's shot volume.

We grade every NHL prop our model tracks and publish the record โ wins and losses โ on our results page. The full picture through October 2026:
Prop market Direction Graded Hit rate Blocked shots (BLK) UNDER 314 58.6% Faceoffs won (FOW) UNDER 302 55.6% Hits (HITS) UNDER 880 54.9% Points (PTS) OVER 491 54.0% Time on ice (TOI) OVER 522 53.8% Time on ice (TOI) UNDER 875 52.8% Points (PTS) UNDER 518 49.0% Shots on goal (SOG) UNDER 892 49.9% Shots on goal (SOG) OVER 1,028 44.7% Hits (HITS) OVER 530 43.0% Faceoffs won (FOW) OVER 361 46.8%
Overall record: 50.7% across 7,357 graded props โ under the 52.4% break-even line at -110, as any unfiltered board should be. (The break-even math is explained in our win-rate guide.) Three patterns run this table:
-
The popularity tax is real. Shots-on-goal overs are the most-tracked market we grade (1,028 props) and the second-worst. Hits overs are worse still (43.0%). These are the props casual money loves โ visible, countable, fun to sweat โ and books price them knowing the demand is one-sided. When everyone wants the same side, the line moves toward the crowd, not toward the truth.
-
The grinder markets carry the edge. Blocked-shot unders at 58.6% are the single strongest NHL category we publish. It makes sense once you think about how the line gets made: a defenseman's block rate swings with game state โ trailing teams' opponents shoot more, leading teams shell up โ and static per-game averages don't capture it. Faceoff and hits unders rhyme with the same logic: matchup- and context-driven stats priced like they're stable.
-
Deployment overs work โ when the deployment is real. Points overs (54.0%) and TOI overs (53.8%) are the two overs worth standing on, because they're bets on a coach's decisions rather than on puck luck. A winger promoted to the top power-play unit has a genuinely different points expectation the same night. The catch: the edge evaporates the moment the role does, which is why our five-check gate re-verifies form, matchup and the simulation on every single candidate โ in mid-October 2026 it rejected eight straight NHL candidates in a row, several wearing ELITE badges, because the underlying signals disagreed. The category earns you a look. It never earns you a pass.
A Data-Backed NHL Prop Strategy
Start with deployment, not talent. Line combinations and power-play units are published daily. A role change is the strongest prop signal in hockey โ stronger than any hot streak.
Fade the fun side on volume markets. If a prop is the one everyone in the bar is sweating (shots over, hits over), assume you're paying a demand premium and demand a better reason than "he's due."
Respect game state. Score effects drive blocks, hits and late TOI. A defenseman's under is a different bet in a projected tight game than in a projected blowout.
Check the building on hits. Hit totals are scorer-recorded and vary by arena. A player's "hit rate" partly measures where he's played โ adjust for home and road before trusting it.
Verify the starter. Goalie confirmations land late and reprice everything from saves to skater scoring props. Never build a night's card before the morning skates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best NHL player prop to bet?
In our tracked data, blocked-shot unders lead everything at 58.6% across 314 graded props, followed by faceoff unders (55.6%) and hits unders (54.9% on 880 graded โ our largest strong sample). The individual line still decides: category first, then the number, then the matchup.
What win rate do you need to profit on NHL props?
52.4% at standard -110 odds. Our unfiltered NHL board grades 50.7% across 7,357 props โ the edge comes from filtering, not from betting more.
Are shots on goal props a good bet?
They're the most popular and, in our data, close to the worst: SOG overs grade 44.7% across 1,028 tracked props, and SOG unders sit at 49.9%. If you play them, you're paying for entertainment โ price that in. What moves an NHL prop line the most?
Lineup news: a line promotion or demotion, a power-play unit change, a confirmed starting goalie, or an injury scratch. Any of them can reprice a player's whole menu in an afternoon.
Where can I see graded NHL prop results?
Our results page publishes the model's full graded record across every sport, updated daily. The learn hub walks through the research process, and our NBA props guide covers the same data-first approach for basketball.
